English language is a global phenomenon that serves as a means of communication for people from diverse backgrounds. It is a West Germanic language that originated in England and is now spoken by millions worldwide. English has become the basic need of the modern world, significantly impacting various aspects of life, including education, business, travel, and culture.
- The Department of English was established in 1964.
Initially, the department offered a Basic English course, which was
a requirement for all students across various programs, including:
B.A. (Bachelor of Arts)
B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce)
B.Sc (Bachelor of Science)
The initial enrollment for this Basic English course was 172 students.
It's wonderful to see how the department has evolved over the years, and I'm sure it has played a significant role in shaping the language skills and literary appreciation of many students
- We acknowledging the contributions of various staff members and heads of department (HoD's) that have played a crucial role in its success. These individuals, including Subba Rao, Mr. Sreenivas Rao, and Mr. Raghava Verma, have likely demonstrated dedication, expertise, and leadership, which have been essential to the department's accomplishments.
- The Optional English course was introduced in the academic year 1993-94 with an initial enrollment of 22 students. Over the years, the course has gained popularity, and as of the academic year 2023-24, the enrollment has increased to 72 students.
That's a significant growth rate! It's great to see more students interested in pursuing English as an optional course.
- The PG program was launched in 2015 with an initial enrollment of 17 students.
As of the academic year 2023-24, the enrollment has decreased to 9 students.
While the enrollment numbers have fluctuated, it's great that the department has been offering a PG program for nearly a decade, providing advanced education and research opportunities for students. If you have any specific questions or would like to discuss the program's curriculum, achievements, or challenges,
- At present Sushma Hugar is the Head of the Department and PG co-ordinator.
- Shivamallikarjuna is an assistant professor and the co-ordinator of "Utopian English Club".
- There are seven other faculty members in the department.
- Among these faculty members, two have qualified for the KSET (Karnataka State Eligibility Test) and NET (National Eligibility Test), which are prestigious academic achievements.
- The Department started the “Utopian English Literary Club”which aims at exploring the skills and talents of the students
- The club aims to provide a platform for students to explore their creative potential and interests in English literature.
- The club likely organizes various activities, such as:
- Literary discussions and debates
- Creative writing and poetry sessions
- Book reviews and analysis
- Public speaking and presentation opportunities
The club's goal is to help students develop their critical thinking, communication, and creative skills, while fostering a love for English literature.
- The Department of English is launched a certificate course titled "Communication and Soft Skills" on July 11, 2024.
- This course aims to equip students with vital skills that are highly valued in academic, professional, and personal settings, including:
- Effective communication strategies
- Public speaking and presentation techniques
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Time management and productivity
- Leadership and problem-solving
By offering this course, the department is demonstrating its commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education that goes beyond traditional academic subjects
