The department of physics came into existence on the day the college was established during the academic year 1964-65. The University of Mysore accorded the affiliation to the department on the basis of the report of chairman of the then academic affiliation committee Dr. D. J. Dawar, Director Collegiate education, Mysore. First two academic years, 1964-65 and 1965-66, physics war offered as one of the optionals for the one year intermediate course (Now Pre-University Course, PUC). In the year 1966-67 affiliation for B.Sc. course was obtained. Sri P. N. Babu Prasad was the head and only faculty in the department. First year student’s strength was 24. Two laboratories were constructed; they were equipped with sophisticated and precision equipments (some of which are still being used). Then on the department grew like a banyan tree. Year by year the student’s strength increased; accordingly numbers of faculty members are also increased.
As per the suggestion pf the NAAC –Peer Committee Department laid one more milestone by opening M.Sc., Physics course in the Department. Initially Five Doctorate holders were engaging the classes; three were from UG department of our College and two from Physics Department of PDIT Engineering College Hosapete. Dr.S.B.Bellad was the Co-Ordinator. Dr. Umapati Pattar and Dr.M. Prabhugouda Associate Professor of UG department of VN College and Dr.N.Nagabushan and Dr.Nagaraj of PDIT College were running the Department. Later H.B.Anandhalli and Basanna Digge were added to the Department. The Intial strength was 20 latter it was raised to 30. Fifty percent seats were from University quota and remaining seats were from management quota. The timely help of Karnataka Government VGST K-Fist level-1 project helped the Department to build up a well equipped lab facility for the course. Following were the faculty members Dr.S.B. Bellad, Dr. Umapati Pattar, H.B.Anandahalli, Dr.N.Nagabushan and Dr.Nagaraj who served the department and retired/transferred since its establishment. After Dr.S.B.
