The department of physics came into existence on the day the college was established during the academic year 1964-65. The University of Mysore accorded the affiliation to the department on the basis of the report of chairman of the then academic affiliation committee Dr. D. J. Dawar, Director Collegiate education, Mysore. First two academic years, 1964-65 and 1965-66, physics war offered as one of the optionals for the one year intermediate course (Now Pre-University Course, PUC). In the year 1966-67 affiliation for B.Sc. course was obtained. Sri P. N. Babu Prasad was the head and only faculty in the department. First year student’s strength was 24. Two laboratories were constructed; they were equipped with sophisticated and precision equipments (some of which are still being used). Then on the department grew like a banyan tree. Year by year the student’s strength increased; accordingly numbers of faculty members are also increased.
